1. Forklift Licence Victoria – 18 Years And Over

To obtain a forklift licence in Victoria students must be 18 years and over. If you are below the minimum age requirement, students will have to wait to complete their forklift licence test. Worksafe Victoria grant exemptions in exceptional circumstances. However, exemptions are rarely granted. Therefore, should this age requirement be an issue with you or a staff member, it is best to discuss this with Worksafe Victoria.

2. Forklift Licence Victoria – Successful Completion Of A Forklift Licence Test

To obtain a forklift licence, students are required to undergo forklift training with a Registered Training Organisation. Forklift training courses consist of both practical and theory components and prepare students for the forklift licence assessment.

At the successful completion of a forklift training course, students then complete a forklift licence test. Students are examined by approved assessors who test their competency levels.

Students are required to successfully pass the assessment component in order to be issued with a forklift licence.

3. Forklift Licence Victoria – What Is In The Practical Forklift Licence Test

The Practical Assessment component comprises a number of practical skill tests. Students are required to successfully listen to and complete a number of instructions set out by assessor whilst in operation of a forklift. This includes a hazard assessment. Students will also be required, amongst other tests, to perform pre-operational and operational checks.

On completion of these tests, students will also be required to successfully complete the load shifting assessment. This will involve students listening to instructions and performing low, mid and high level lifts, and manoeuvering through a course to demonstrate to the assessor that the student has good control of the forklift. Upon completion of load shifting, students will be evaluated on their ability to shutdown the machine and secure the site.

The assessments conducted by assessors are stringent as forklift operation is considered high risk work. Students must demonstrate a high level of competency and safety as a forklift operator.

4. Forklift Licence Victoria – The Theory Part Of The Test

The theory test is a written test. It comprises 52 questions from a total of 97. These questions are taken from the Worksafe Victoria questions guide.

There are 30 “Critical Questions” (marked with a star) in the theory assessment, and all must be correctly answered.

There are a further 22 questions which completes the remaining theory assessment. Students are required to obtain a minimum pass mark of at least 75% from these remaining questions.

Therefore, students are required to answer 52 questions in total in order to successfully complete the theory component of the forklift licence assessment.

5. Forklift Licence Victoria – Submit Your Application To Worksafe Victoria

Students who have successfully passed their assessment and deemed competent and safe by the assessor will be issued with a “Notice of Assessment”(NOA). This temporary licence is necessary to apply for your Forklift licence. The temporary licence is valid for 60 days.

Within 60 days, students are reminded to submit their application to Worksafe Victoria. This process can be completed through a local post office.

A forklift licence is valid for a period of 5 years.

6. Forklift Licence Victoria – What Types Of Courses Are Offered

There are many forklift training courses offered by RTO’s in Victoria. A majority of training centres offer two day and even five day forklift training programs for inexperienced operators. The type of forklift training course students are required to complete will vary depending on their experience and the number of hours they have logged.

All forklift training programs will teach students about pre operational checklists required prior to beginning work.

Training courses will also teach students about operational checks on the forklift. Training will also extensively cover load shifting and shutting down and securing a site.

The trainer will explain each question and answer of the theory component.
