Is there a requisite age to obtain a forklift licence?

In order to obtain a forklift licence, a student must meet the minimum age requirement. The current minimum age requirement is 18 years and older. However, there are exceptional circumstances that Worksafe Victoria may approve.

For more information on these exceptions, it is advised you speak to Worksafe
Victoria directly.

If an exemption is not granted by Worksafe, then a student will be required to wait until they are at least 18 years of age.

Are there any other pre requisites for a forklift licence?

As discussed above, age is an important requisite. However, it is not the only one.

Forklift training is also required. Students are required to enrol and complete an approved forklift training course provisioned by a Registered Training Organisation or a training centre affiliated with a RTO.

Students are also required to have basic written and oral English skills. Basic English is necessary as trainers and assessors will provide instructions to students on how to safely operate a forklift. Should a student not have basic English, it will be difficult for trainers to teach a student how to operate a forklift safely and competently.

Students are also required to successfully complete a two part theory and practical forklift licence assessment.

The theory component is comprised of 52 questions. A trainer will discuss all questions and answers in the training course. It is important students have a thorough understanding.

The practical component consists of a number of set completed task that the trainer will instruct the student to complete.

Upon successful completion of the assessment, students will be issued with a temporary 60 day licence. Prior to being issued with a licence, you are required to have 100 Points of ID.

The training centres we match students with have approved assessors who are all Authorised Certificate Assessors. All have years of forklift operating and teaching experience. Further, all have current industry experience so that trainers can quickly identify any weaknesses or bad habits students may have picked up whilst operating a forklift in a workplace.
